Learning with Magic School Bus Rides Again!

I don’t know about your house, but mine was very excited for the release of the new Magic School Bus series on Netflix! With all our favorite characters back, and new ones to meet, we settled in to watch. I won’t lie, there were a few things to get used to, including the new animation and a new teacher, but the core story telling was a great as we remembered! The kids were eating it up. The next thing to do for this home school house to do was to capitalize on this interest. Here are learning resources to accompany each of the ENTIRE first Season. These are laid out in a week long schedule for each episode, but you can use them however they help most in your house! Happy homeschooling…

Invasive Species

Monday:

In this lesson and game, students will learn about invasive species in Michigan,

characteristics that make species good invaders, factors that can influence plant

community assembly, and the role that people play in causing and proliferating

invasions.

Tuesday:

Burmese pythons are native to Southeast Asia, but in the last 40 years, they’ve

invaded the Florida Everglades, where their population has exploded. This short

comic explains how Burmese pythons got there in the first place — and how it’s

wreaking havoc on the ecosystem.

Wednesday:

Watch Aqua Kids Episode

Join the Aqua Kids as they look into the Invasive Snakehead Fish that is becoming a serious issue

for many states on the East Coast of the United States. See what the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is

doing to combat this predator.

Activity: 4 ENGINEERING CHALLENGES

Here’s a simple open-ended building activity for kids of all ages – Colored craft sticks, wooden cubes, and small plastic cups!  Simple materials, and yet we have been having a blast building all kinds of amazing structures with them.

Thursday:

ACTIVITY: Have you noticed columns in buildings and other structures, like parking garages? What shape are the columns? Are they on the inside of the building/structure to serve their practical purpose of supporting beams or arches? Or are they exterior columns which lend support but also beauty to the structure?

Watch & Do: A short mpeg time-lapse film of cloud moving across the sky, trees moved by the wind, a sign rocking in the wind, a windmill turning and children sailing in a dinghy.

Read read a story by Pat Hutchins titled The Wind Blew, followed by these simple,  fun wind experiments!
